Oh yes, I also have a shorter neck which seems to matter with a lot of styles. Not the perfect body but a body that many other women can relate to and I feel like we curvy short girls are underrepresented on social media! So, here I am!

Great for Double Mastectomy with Reconstruction Patients

Recently I underwent a double mastectomy (here I am 2 months post-op). I also had full reconstruction using the fat from my tummy transferred to my chest.

It truly changed my life and made me more conscious of what I purchase, and what I put on my body.

No longer do I crave what’s popular but what makes me feel happy and comfortable and what I can wear year after year, season after season. And this dress is IT!

I’ve been shopping for some beautiful pieces to fit my new body! This MOMO x Free People Bella Flor Kaftan caught my eye.

First of all, this dress is gorgeous and it LOOKS so EXPENSIVE! Okay, it’s actually quite expensive too! But, it looks luxurious and colorful and when I look at it it just makes me smile and want to twirl around.

A good feeling to have after undergoing surgery and a huge change in my body. Definitely, this is a piece of clothing that brings me a lot of joy.

Embroidered Flower Kaftan Features

Purchased on the Free People Website for $298 + Tax. I paid about $320 after tax. I ended up using Klarna to split my payments at 0% interest.

The first thing I noticed when I opened the package as it arrived from Free People was that this caftan was HEAVY! It feels very substantial.

All that beautiful embroidery weighs a ton! Some may not like it but to be honest it feels somewhat comforting against the body. Like a heavy, huggable blanket.

The floral embroidery is so colorful! Every color of the rainbow is on this dress. It is definitely a conversation piece as it looks like it was hand-made by skilled artisans (which it was).

The thread used on the embroidery is thick, almost like yarn. It feels like a plush cotton and it sticks out a little bit giving the dress more dimension.

Tan crocheting adorns the neckline, hemline, and sleeve openings, and is placed throughout the body of the caftan.

The hemline crochet detail is small and scalloped at the edges.

Free People Embroidered Bella Flor Kaftan on a Petite Frame

When I first tried on the dress it seemed that the draped neckline would be too wide for my narrow shoulders but the dress stayed on without any issues.

The V-shaped neckline that is identical at the front and back, is also not too deep.

The other issue I was thinking might make me return this dress was the sleeves. I was afraid that the armholes would be too revealing.

Fortunately, the sleeves are longer than expected and the extra weight of the crochet detail around the arm openings makes them hang lower. So even when they billow out, they are still covering up and won’t expose the side of your bra/chest through the armhole.

As can be seen in the photos and videos of the dress laying flat. It has a “T” shape that is identical in the back and front. This allows the dress to be really billowy! It’s so nice on a hot summer day!

Like I said before, the dress has some weight to it which is helpful in having it be oversized but not billowing out in the wind a la Marilyn Monroe. You will always be covered up.

I don’t really think it would be a good swimsuit cover-up even though it has that look. The dress is quite heavy and the embroidery, when it gets wet, could take a long time to dry or even unravel. I would reserve this dress for non-beachy outings such as brunch, shopping, or a day visiting parks and museums.

Stylish After a Double Mastectomy in this Bella Flor Kaftan

After my double mastectomy with reconstruction, I had to wear a special, pretty large, full-coverage bra and it didn’t show at all with this dress! No bra showing at the front or back nor shoulder straps.

The V-neckline and the V at the back are not too deep or wide so you are free to wear a full-coverage bra, a dainty tiny bra, or no bra at all and you can feel comfortable.

After my double mastectomy, a garment’s wearability with a maximum support bra with full coverage cups is a feature I look for that I didn’t care about before.

This Free People Bella Flor Kaftan will cover you up on top because the sleeves drape quite low and you won’t get the dreaded peekaboo of the bra and “side boob”. This was a big deal for me after my double mastectomy as I still have scarring and swelling as well as I am unable to shave my armpits yet (TMI alert LOL).

Styling the Free People x MOMO New York Bella Flor Kaftan

On the Free People website this dress, in white, is styled over light-wash slim jeans. In my opinion, this look is cool and edgy but to be honest you have to be tall to pull this off. Not a look for us curvy, short girls.

There is also a blue version of this kaftan, that’s harder to find that was styled with wide-leg, oversized 90s-inspired jeans. That look wasn’t my favorite.

This dress in my opinion is best styled with sandals. If you are petite like me, I suggest open-toe sandals to give you length.

I styled this look with my Chanel Dad Sandals but you can style it with something designer, Birkenstocks, or anything you can find.

If you are tall I think you can get away with close-toe sandals or even a cool pair of sneakers such as Adidas or Golden Goose.

For a western flare, pairing this dress with short or medium-length cowboy boots would definitely be a vibe!

I have a short torso and when I tried to belt the dress with a simple, cream-colored leather belt it really did not look good. It made my top half bulgy. Not a good look.

But, if you are tall, have a long torso and smaller breasts belting this beautiful kaftan will work! Wear it loose during the day, strap a belt on, and put on some fancy sandals for an evening look.

I think long hair or long hair in a messy bun really works for this dress! I wish I had my long hair but I cut it before my surgery! I’m waiting day in and day out until it grows out! Something about a messy bun with this dress gives it a casual yet luxurious California look.

Short hair works with this dress too but you really need a necklace of some sort! I would suggest something dainty to offset the vibrant and oversized look of the dress and floral print.

Amazon has some amazing options that are similar in look (and 1/10th of the price!).

Of course, these options are NOT artisan handmade, not made in the USA, and not pieces you’ll keep for years to come BUT if you are not 100% sold on the $300 Free People options – go for these instead and save some money while trying out the colorful, embroidered flower caftan look!

If you see yourself reaching for this type of style, go ahead and splurge on the real thing!
